Trump's Progressive Alarm Misses The Continent's True Threat: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's security policy document offers a flawed view of the European Union. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and so-called "woke" agendas represent an grave risk to European civilization. However, this perspective is based on a serious misreading of the reality. The true challenge facing Europe is not societal but technological and economic lag.

A Glaring Growth Gap Between the US and Europe

The data reveal a stark picture. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by 87%, compared to a mere thirteen and a half percent increase for the EU. Over this time, European income per person dropped from over three-quarters to just half of the American figure. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now has a higher per capita income than major European economies like Italy and France.

Today, roughly half of the global top fifty tech companies are American, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Innovation Deficit: The Core Question

The growing disparity is driven by superior productivity growth in the US, fueled by technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The scene of global tech leadership is overwhelmingly American. In the last five decades, 241 US firms have scaled into enterprises valued at over $10bn, compared with just 14 in Europe.

This disparity raises a pressing question: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, where does Europe stand? Experts widely concede it is largely a two-horse race involving the United States and China, with Europe entering at a clear disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Innovation Gap

A number of major factors account for this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a far deeper and more dynamic system for financing new ventures. Europe has yet to establish a true capital markets union, a factor that caps the scale of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented regulation hamper European business. A American entrepreneur can introduce a service under one regulatory framework to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a larger population size, is divided among twenty-seven separate regimes, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In parts of Europe, business failure was historically met with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's chronic underinvestment in defense has eroded its ability in pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Hopefulness

In spite of these hurdles, one can find causes for hope. European leaders are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have begun to propose substantial change. Key reports on European competitiveness and the internal market point to the need for major reforms.

Given appropriate policies and rule changes, Europe's strengths could support much higher degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent still possesses significant advantages: high-quality workforce, top-tier schools and universities, and world-class labs. Coupled with a large internal market and substantial household savings, these elements have the potential to trigger a new wave of venture creation.

Crucially, even if the EU does not take the lead in creating cutting-edge tech, it can still dramatically increase productivity by implementing and tailoring innovations from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now stands at a decisive moment. As the saying goes, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, the continent's technological decline has been steady. However, without decisive action to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could give way to a sudden and irreversible loss of world influence.
