Individuals Discontinuing Weight-Loss Injections Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that people who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt traditional diet and exercise programs.

Research printed in a leading medical journal points out that while overweight people often shed about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals buying these drugs need to be cognizant of the potential of rapid weight regain when the medication ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery suggests a return to starting weight in about one and a half years.

Analyzing Approaches

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.

Scientists note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting generally have a more gradual weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Experts suggest the mode of action of the injections accounts for the accelerated weight return.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this medication results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Issue?

Health authorities recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have come off the medication report a intense resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if a switch activating and you become extremely hungry," recalled a patient.

The struggle is compounded if individuals have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Widespread Adoption

Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among women than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success relies on integrated behavioural support.
