Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opener Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements made by skipper Stokes about the dressing room not being "weak men".

Stokes made this message in multiple conversations in the wake of his team's defeat in the second Ashes series against the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had let his message to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

But, after the opener scored 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" comment after his side were beaten in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The team afterwards went on a break to a Queensland resort between the second and third matches.

Prior to this match, he said his players had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the messaging from the captain and head coach McCullum had remained consistent with their prior tenure in charge.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," noted the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we could do something special entering this Test."

Australia Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal on day four came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant England six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional total of 435.

This means, Australia need just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an insurmountable three-nil advantage with three Tests.

Defeat would prolong England's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes loss.

This series will be completed in just eleven days of cricket – after England fell the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," said Crawley. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. They're a very, very good team. It was inevitably hard touring here to face them. They entered as the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position In Question

Although the opener's innings in Adelaide probably answers questions about his immediate place in the side, Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in the team's second knock on Saturday, adding to his poor record against the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a half-century and averages 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

However, the opener said any suggestion Pope is under the microscope comes from "the media" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added he. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is talk from the outside. There's no discussion of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," he concluded.
